YEAH! Spring is coming! I took my two smaller kids out for a wet, muddy walk today (which they seemed to enjoy) in our mid-50s weather, to a spot in the UW-Arboretum that I suspected would be a good site for skunk cabbage - Symplocarpus foetidus - and I was right! This is probably the first time that I've seen skunk cabbage before it has really started to fully bloom. I'm heading back to this spot in a couple of days with my tripod and w/o the kids.
Now, I have an absolutely wonderful, beautiful wife, but English is not her native language. So, when I told her that I was going for a walk in the woods to look for skunk cabbage, she just looked at me, dumbfounded - why are you going to look for skunks? ;) Yes, our discussions can be very amusing at times... When we were first dating, we were driving around Madison and she was mentioning that she had been thinking of moving to San Francisco. I started to rave about how beautiful, how wonderful Madison is... We have four beautiful lakes, I said... She gave me this quizzical look... I started to name them - Mendota, Monona, Kegonsa, Waubesa... Now, she looked at me with even more confusion... "What do you mean, four beautiful legs???" :)~!
