Sparrow Hawk / American Kestrel
Ran across this beauty at the old Fort Worth Landfill. Notice dinner in its talon. He was very much aware of me and soon flew off to eat.

Here is the next shot in the series. Mouse is still in its clutches.

Nice job with this one, Daniel! I especially like the coloration in the second shot - beautiful plummage.

I am a little curious why you didn't zoom all the way out to 400mm...

All I can say is: I meant to be at 400!

It is nice to see an American Kestrel in good detail. I saw my first kestrel in the wild earlier this year but didn't have a decent setup to make a good image. I'd love to rectify that someday soon. BTW, I like the strong graphic shapes of the tail feathers and wing position in the second image. Thanks for sharing Daniel.

Gale - Sometimes I get lucky. I've been back four times since and haven't had anything close to these first images of a gorgeous raptor. There is actually a mated pair of kestrels that make their home in the old FTW Landfill. I have lots of shots of them perched together on a distant radio tower, also hovering and diving for food, but never close enough to be worth sharing. Here is an uncropped example where I used the 100-400 + 1.4tc and manual focus.
