I've been watching this red-bellied woodpecker out my back window for a couple of weeks now, and hoped he would decide to nest in this old snag. Well, today I caught him doing a little spring-cleaning. He'd peck around inside for a while, then gather up the debris and dump it out the hole. This went on for about a half-hour until he took off for a lunch break.
I thought maybe you drove down to the lake. Very cool capture catching the splinters. How many shots did that take? :)

Very interesting shot Bill. The debris failing really takes it to the next level.

I love shots like this one. It is not just a fine photo, but a natural history lesson as well. It tells us something about the nesting habits of Red Bellied Woodpeckers aka Peckerwoods!

This is really neat Bill. I love the action you caught which tells something about the species. I also like the predominent grays and how they set off the "peckerwood" in it's nest. Good stuff!
