Taken from a semi-permanent hide set up on a pool I had constructed, just behind my apartment in Lesvos. The pool was continuously drip fed. Chilled beer was served mid-day, with tea/coffee at all other times.
Images of the set-up are available, but there are more than one. This, plus other reasons, I think it best that I don’t post them, but if anyone wants to view them, just contact me direct.
I have only been able to fleetingly visit here since my last post, due to a brief stay in hospital followed by a five day throat infection, so with this in mind I’m taking this opportunity to answer some of the questions raised in my last post “Collard Pratincole”, as they are to some degree, pertinent here also.
Billy F. asked where the Pratincole was taken, on the same island as this shot, Lesvos.
Richard P. asked why f13, well I invariably start at either f8 – f11, as this is usually where most lenses perform the best, I then consider shutter speed, D.O.F. etc.
Also asked, “Why a cable release”, well that’s all to do with limitations, both within myself, and everyone else, and the equipment. When I can get my head fully together, I’ll send to an e-mail to explain more fully.
Mark S. asked are they large birds, Collard Pratincoles that is, reasonably, about twice the size of a Blackbird.
Alan B. mentioned my post script and suggested a revamp, “N.B. I don’t as a rule, revisit a post, so please e-mail me with any queries.”. Well Alan, I looked at what you said, and decided the best option was to remove the phrase. The reason being, that there will always be someone, who will insist on dotting the “t’s” and crossing the “i’s”. If you look you will see that I now qualify my image flipping statement. If you are now thinking, “Surely you don’t mean …..”, Oh yes I do, some think I mean vertical, even when it can only be horizontal.
I'm afraid this image does nothing for me, the bird appears to be facing slightly away from you and appears a touch static when you expect some form of action, which, I'm sure you could have got had you opened up a shade, (you don't say whether this is a scan or not) if digital you could always have upped the ISO.
Your horizon also appears to be a touch out...
You have also posted in untagged RGB which hasn't done it justice colour wise even in Firefox.
I also question the release... at 1/125s you are surely in the danger zone for mirror slap?
Hello Ray, I'm sitting in a stuffy office in West Wales (obviously not as hot as Lesvos) with the sun shining outside and that beer does sound tempting. As for the picture I think I'd have left it unflipped. For me, I look at an image left to right and the way your image is now set my eye carries on out of the image. If left in it's original format the eye runs through the picture but is then halted by the bird looking to the left thus holding the interest in the frame. I hope what I've written makes sense. The bird looks a bit dejected, perhaps he'd been hoping for the beer instaed of water!

Glad to hear you are feeling better...

As a record I think it is fine....
That chilled beer sounds very tempting.
