Grass snake (Natrix natrix) and environment
A slightly different take on a Grass snake image but this time showing it basking after recent emergence from hibernation. Whilst they forage in the water, grass snakes hibernate often along woodland rides and scrub patches. I hope to obtain some 'in-water' shots later in the season but it's good to have the full story.. This is a large (4ft +) female, one of the largest grass snakes, in both length and girth, I've seen..

Have a good day folks.

Great shot, I like the style, the 'scapes perhaps a little disappointing, but you take what you can get this time of year! (Of course, that's just an aesthetic opinion, as an 'illustrative' image no nits).

an excellent shot Brett, I really like this. I'm surprised the snake allowed you to get so close, I normally see them disappearing rapidly into the undergrowth.

Once again, thank you folks for your kind comments. It's good to know that these kind of images can be appealing as it's not always the case for reptiles of any sort. Thanks for taking the time.

Kind regards,

That's a wonderful image Brett. This sort of shot really does it for me. It sets the scene beautifully and although the bg might lack something outstanding, it adds a lot to this shot.
