I am going down to Alamosa with a friend to shoot the Dunes, but mostly to shoot the Sandhill Cranes. I was wondering if anyone has been there for this migration and can tell me the best place to set up for shots? So far I was told Fruitgrowers Resivoir was good off of North Rd outside of Eckert. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
I just drive all the roads of the refuge. The cranes will tell you where you need to be, since they aren't always in the same spot each day. Be aware that telephone/power lines are a real issue anywhere on the refuge. I've never photographed the sandhills by the dunes, only on the refuge grounds, and mostly MonteVista rather than Alamosa.
As Don said I've had my best shooting riding the roads around the refuge. Morning light was great in various fields. Also keep your eye out for other birds such as great horned owls etc.and deer along the cottonwoods.
