A few days ago I posted a message asking about good campsites within a couple hours of portland which weren't too crowded. I got some good suggestions but I also did some more research of my own and found some good potential spots.

I found a great website with a huge listing of campsites in oregon and the rest of the US. I think it has all the campsites in the national forest system and state park system in oregon. It was very useful and had a short description as well as its coordinates in google maps. One thing it didn't have which I wish it did was a map of the area with placemarks of all the campsites. So I went ahead and pulled all the coordinates from the campsites and plugged them into google earth. I figured after all that hard work I might as well share it so I imported it into a little google map application I made that is viewable online.

As of right now it only has campsites in the Mt Hood National Forest but I'm hoping to expand it further starting with Willamette National Forest and then maybe some state parks as well. I have also made the google earth .kml file available for download as well if anyone wants to view it in google earth to get directions to the campsite or customize it themselves.

Austin, thanks for sharing the great amount of effort you put into this project.
FYI, the forums do support some html, specifically text formatting and link insertion. On the new post entry page there is a Text Style Menu link that describes how to include a link in your post.

Here is your link from above to your campsites page

Now, if you would, direct me to the place where I can learn how to include a Google Map in my web page and generate a .kml file. I could use this to geo-locate pictures in my gallery for the viewer. You might put this into a post in the NPN "digital imaging" forum also.

First you can create your .KML file with the google earth application which can be downloaded from google. Then you will have to have a google account to add a map to your page. The go to http://code.google.com/apis/maps/signup.html to sign up for an API which is basically a free license to use google maps on your page. They will give you a key which is specific to your domain. If you want to steal the source code on my page go ahead, you should just have to replace your own Google Maps API key and the URL of your own .kml file. You may also want to change the start coordinates and zoom level also though. I have an e-mail link on my main webpage http://www.austinbooth.com so feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions.
