Hey PNWNP folks,
Sorry for my absence of late. Things have been busy, but I have been checking in on your posts when I can. It always gives me a good boost of photography energy.
One of the things that has been keeping me busy is working on a new iPhone application of my photography. I partnered with a couple of Ashland based companies that develop apps for the iPhone. It has been a fun experiment. Photography and other forms of art are no longer confined to just prints on a wall or images in a book (this forum would be a great example). I'm excited by the idea of exploring new ways in which people can access, enjoy and share photography and other forms of art. The iPhone is pretty ground breaking in this respect.
Anyway, just thought I would share this recent development. If you have an iPhone or just want to take a look at the app you can CHECK IT OUT HERE. Cheers!
I don't plan on ever buying an I phone, but I did check out the app. I noticed your photos show up with much more clarity and 3-d quality than I'm used to seeing from online pictures...including yours on this site. Do you know why that is?
OK, I bit. Purchased the app and I like it. Nice work. How can other photographers possibly get a similar app of their own work out there thru the Envision developers?

Thanks for the comments/questions. Jay, glad my photos appear to have good clarity and dimension on the web. That is certainly a goal with my photography, and it is nice to know it comes through. Actually, I'm always a little disappointed when I veiw my images compressed for web presentation after working with the full res files. I don't think I do anything special. After downsizing to web res it is important to carefully optimize contrast, color and sharpening for web output. Heavy compression can really cause a loss of detail, color and sharpness in some images.
Craig, glad you like the app. It is kind of fun to be able to play the slide shows on the phone and also use the images as wallpaper. To find out about developing an app of your photography I would contact the guys at Open Door Network. Their website is www.opendoor.com.

Just got it! It was the thing my iPhone needed, pics from home and really nice ones at that. As soon as I saw CL and Wizard Island I was all over the Buy button. Thanks for doing this!
Hi Sean,
Do you know if you or iEnvision converted your images using the usual web output procedures? I ask, because about six months ago, our president did an article for one of our newsletters that talked about color on the iPhone. In the article, there's a link where you can download an .ICC profile of a typical iPhone. Just wondering if your images might be optimized by taking into consideration the actual gamut of the iPhone display instead of just using sRGB. (The actual gamut of the display is a bit bigger than a typical laptop, but smaller than sRGB.)

Sean, do you know if they are planning to port this to other platforms (like pocket pc/windows mobile)?
I just shelled out a lot of money for my ATT Tilt a year ago. I don't plan on buying another gadget for a good long while... if ever. I need a camera body upgrade first

Patrick - As far as I know they just kept them in the sRGB color space that I delivered them in, but I'm not sure. Next time I chat with them I'll ask. When I upload photos to my iPhone from my computer in sRGB they look the same, so I'm not sure I could tell the difference. Interesting that there is a special iPhone profile.
Curtis - I doubt that they are going to develop any apps for other phone platforms. The main dude is pretty much a hard core Apple devote.

Sean, congrats !! This is very cool.... another happy customer (I have an iPod Touch and LOVE this thing to death.... can check email from any coffee shop, check weather, tide charts, where the sun will set, surf the web and play some really fun games with my 8 year old daughter).....
I'm typing this on my iPhone while Nancy drives us home. I'm totally addicted to this amazing device! What is way cool is I have a bunch of my work formatted for the iPhone! It rox to meet folks, share with them that after a week of work at Microsoft Research I do photography - and being able to show them beautifully formatted images on my iPhone! That my friends is way cool! And I didn't need a 3rd party app to do it either!
