In the White Mountains of California. This specimen was 4-5 feet in diameter and probably 500-800 years old. I enjoyed the study of exposed layers of wood.

Love it Marc. The abstract vertical lines lead my eye nicely and the mix of warm and cool tones are very appealing. Keep up the good work

I sometimes get into the rut of shooting vertical line vertically. This being a horizontal tells me I need to deviate sometimes.
This is a stunning image.

The colors and textures are wonderful here, Marc. I remember seeing some pretty massive junipers hiking in the San Bernardino Mtns. when I lived in SoCal. A refreshing departure for you, I think!
I'm a big fan of trees with character. This one is no exception. I think I see your intention of symmetry with the composition, but for me the right 1/4 doesn't quite hold up to the rest of the tree. The frayed out section snags my attention, breaking the flow through the frame. I think cropping just to the left of there might be an idea worth playing with. A square crop actually works pretty well also.
I was wondering if you use live view for manual focusing much. I've found it to be a huge help in scenes like this one. You would think that f/14 at 30-ish mm would have plenty of DOF, but whenever i use live view in addition to the DOF preview, its astonishing how critical it is to nail the focus in close quarters like this.

I agree with Jack, the vertical lines done in landscape made it come alive to me. The other thing that really works are the cool and warm tones intermixed...and don't you just enjoy seeing the "history" in the wood?
Hey, nice to see you back and your SITE up again. No need to tell you how much we'd like to whap a certain "web designer" on the head with a Nerf Bat (don't think that's illegal as far as I know...)

I'm not sure about this one. I like the idea, and it's obviously spot-on technically, but it just doesn't strike me. There's something about the balance of the image that makes me feel like it's incomplete and chopped off. sorry I can't expand upon that, but figured at least the opinion might be of some value. Or not :)
Glad to see you posting some new work for sure!

Very cool abstract really like the pattern, details and colors very nice. I think the right side really adds to the overall image.
