Here's one from my brief adventures to the foothills of the sierras last week. I have a tendency to walk the fine line between chaos and beauty sometimes.. I'm afraid this may err on the side of chaos, so I'd like to hear your honest thoughts. I was drawn to the light and the dappled colors throughout the scene, and found the rocks, larger tree, and tree in the back to provide enough anchoring for me, but I have a feeling it's probably not going to work for most people... but I thought I'd throw it out there. I've got some less questionable ones to share later too

Here's a bigger one too: http://florisvanbreugel.smugmug.com/photos/498516089_r3po2-O.jpg

Floris,

I love the colors and real feeling of Spring the shot evokes. The placement of the rocks are great compositionally.

This is one of those shots where I think some will like, some not as much. For me there are just too many branches competeing for attention which kind of give the frenzied, chaotic look you mentioned. These branches are even more dominant in the larger version.

But hey, some artists had some pretty chaotic paintings which were popular. So who knows.

Edit: One thing I would try in looking at the image again is to try reducing the contrast and/or sharpness of the branches especially the right side - basically a slight softening of this part. This could balance out the rest of the scene.

I like it Floris. It says wilderness to me. Good lighting and textures.
I suspect that this was taken in the Kings River Valley off State Rt.180
that you mentioned last week. I was there 4 or 5 days ago. It's a
beautiful location but difficult to photograph.

I don't think it's too chaotic at all. I like it.

I am with Dan, I don't think it is chaotic and I like it too. It has a really nice painterly look to it. Works for me.

On my drive back from Merced canyon a couple of weeks ago, the ranchland between Coarsegold and Fresno on 41 had miles and miles with patches of yellow and white for as far as the eye could see. It was absolutely beautiful. Oh, to get access to those ranches!

Floris, I recall a shot I had that was a bit chaotic and was subjected to input as such. That all changed when a well respected photographer came along and commented with, "well folks, that's what nature looks like out there if you haven't been out there before."
This sure looks like nature out there to me too. All kidding aside, compositions are some how not always perfect or how we may have even thought they would come out, but, we at least got a good respectable image such as this one.

haha Paul, I'll have to remember that quote, that is really great!

Thanks folks, I'm glad to hear it's working.. yep, this is what it looks like out there!

Robert - this was on E Trimmer past Piedra.

Harley - I know... I shot this from behind the barb wire fence... there's so many beautiful places, shame we can't get access (legally, or easily).
