Jay in Snowstorm
Hard to believe now we're in typical Spring sunshine and showery weather that only a week ago in Norway these were the conditions!

I'm generally a fan of small subject in big enviro shots - at least at the time I take them, and then I wonder if the space etc really is working well.

Interested in views/feedback on this.

I think I really like this one - I say think because in between possibly cropping a little off the top and keeping it as is.

It's nice to see wildlife in a landscape especially for me, really well executed shot !

Ahh - a time with no eagles - we had one or two of those Mark  so you turn your attention to the corpse-devouring Jays - just to stop the shutter from freezing up

Can't make my mind up on this one Mark - I know where you're coming from as I do them myself, then sit and question them for months

For them to work I think they need to be very strong comp-wise, and like hundreds of my own, I can't decide if this one has enough strength - dunno mate

I like it too, Nice simple but very effective.

I like this. It looks as though all the misery of the weather is being heaped on one, poor animal. I know that feeling!

My first thought was what the caption might be, so in my book that means it works for me. Possibly a tad too much space at the top for my taste, but not a lot in it. Interesting shot :toast:

Jury is still out here Mark... like it and like the idea, I think it is the large white splodges that I find unappealing if that makes sense? They seem to spoil that expanse of negative space that is simply occupied by the snow.....

I like the picture with this much space, because your subject is clearly recognizable and sharp.
Only the white spots in the BG I find a little disturbing (I do not mean the falling snow  )

really like this, the falling snow and simple setting are great, do wish there was a little more space on the right though

Heya Mark,

I think I would chop off some space at the top until you get to the white out of focus 'blobs'. I think it would balance the pic some. The snow adds so much to the image overall.

Norway was pretty wet when I was there but the buses and trains were still running!

Cheers,

Chris

Mark

I think it works (to my eye at least), this is a well balanced shot that allows subject to 'breath' and the snow fall to become an important ingredient in the shot.

Definitely works for me, but it is only one of the options. It would be a useful shot to a mag editor because of all that light grey space which would carry type well and it would work equally well as a landscape cropped from this shot. I am biased because I like these kind of shots anyway.

Looked at this a few times now. Without the large white blobs, this would be a real winner!

Love it! Bird could be more dynamic but not much you could do about that! Cheers, Mark
