Gas for the car-$10, breakfast at McDonalds-$10, snacks and drinks-$7........shooting with my grandson on spring break..priceless.
We went to Juniper Pass for sunrise on Wednesday (11 degrees with a wind chill of -2), and it was great getting to spend time with him.
This bush was at the overlook, and it's the second time I have tried to capture my intent, which is nature finds a way. I would really like to hear your thoughts on comp, separation of the bush from the background, anything at all.
Oh, yeah, this is keeping with Mel's post on an intimate nature theme, too.
Thanks,
Morris

Morris, I take my 6-year-old grandson with me a lot. He is interested in photography though the attention span is short at that age. I don't really care whether he develops as a photographer but I sure want him to enjoy the outdoors as much as I do. I never have a problem with him wanting to tag along though I am not sure 11-degrees in the wind would cut it with him. I can't say I particularly like this image. The comp is fine but it is difficult to separate the bush from the background and tell what is going on. I have seen a lot of your work that I like much better and that is most of it.
Yeah, you guys are hitting the sore spot for me, Steven and Rod. I wish I could get more separation there. Any ideas to help with that would be appreciated. And James, you are so right!
While improved, I still have a difficult time separating the bush and the rocks. It might be worth revisiting the same site in a couple weeks and trying it again as the bush begins to leaf out.
Thanks Steven. Maybe different lighting as in maybe more sidelighting. It's an intriguing bush and I'm going to keep trying.

Morris, you might try to shoot it when it is shaded. I think the reduction in contrast may make the texture less abrasive and allow you to make the tone and color separations the focus. I think the subject can work.

Good to read that you are getting play time with the grandson. That makes the shot worth the effort.
+1 with Rod that it is difficult to separate the bush and the background.
