I had the pleasure of getting lost at the Dunes with Stan Rose yesterday. Considering I was pretty sick I don't know how I survived the trip to the Star Dune but it was a lot of fun, until we realized on the trip back that the lights we thought were the visitor center were actually the campsite and we went a lot further north then that But that just added to the adventure. My plan of staying overnight evaporated once I thought about waking up in my truck freezing while I'm sick. So I headed home at night. Which pretty much guaranteed perfect conditions for sunrise
Anyway, great trip with great company and here is a few shots.

Thats a cool "eye". Great composition.
Did you take any with a tighter crop?
Very nice light and color on the last one.
I hope you have a speedy recovery.
I'm sure Stan will post the super sunrise shots that you missed.

Nice work! I really like the silhouette of Standune.
I've thought for a long time that it wouldn't be a bad idea for the Park Service to install a small, solar-powered colored light at the exit point of the dunes, so those who hike back in the dark can find their way. I headed out to shoot sunrise one time, and came across a guy who had spent the night just on the other side of Medano Creek (which was flowing nicely), because he had lost his way in the dark the night before and couldn't tell how far across the creek was, or where the exit point was. He was only yards from it, but spent a cold night on the dune flats without a coat.
Hope you get well soon. I've had the same cold for about 4 weeks. Good days, Bad days. I guess I'll have it until I catch the next one.
Once again you have some excellent captues, Aleks. While 1 is nice, 3 and the last one are just killer. Oh, and nice shots of Stan, too.
Alex, those are great, the silhouette of me (well, o, im biased) and the last one are fantastic! My shots turned out better than i expected. Sorry you missed sunrise, but at least you now know how not to hike to Star Dune

LOL!!! Great idea John The name is actually borrowed from a song by Tool... one of my favorite bands. I guess I got talking music with Stan for a long time while lost at the dunes
