With the Macro/close up season approaching I (like Jeroen) have been looking at alternatives. I am using a slightly different approach though by using an enlarging lens (it is one that we used to use a few years back for medium to high macro work).
At the moment I have simply taped it to the front of one of a set of tubes therefore magnification is altered by adding or removing tubes. I am looking at using bellows for more control and adapting an old body cap as a mount for the lens.
Focus is by shifting everything crudely and then fine tuning using the rail. Lighting here is provided by a daylight balanced desk lamp plus a silver reflector... Magnification as reproduced is between x12 to x15 (I really should have measured it more accurately) plus I could possibly have stacked the focus, but this is only early stages of experimenting....
All the best

Such fine detail and nicely lit Phil and it looks like I might need another trip up to the 'big smoke' to see how this works.. Hope to catch up again soon.
Excellent detail, works well it seems ! I'm currently looking into get some extension tubes, purley for larger than life size stuff as I already have my sigma 180mm. I'm not entirely sure what i'm really looking for though!

aren't most enlarger lenses 39mm thread mount? I think u can get an L39 to EF adapter off ebay (i had one from 39-m42 once) and then adapt it to one of the elcheapo ebay bellows. I've used one of the ebay bellows and they are more than lovely!
