I installed Photoshop CS on a new computer and it now doesn't recognize NEF (Nikon RAW) files. Someone is probably going to tell me this is related to Adobe Camera Raw. That will make me wonder:
Where did I get ACR to begin with? Is included in Photoshop?

Probably the version you have on your install CD predated NEF. Check the Adobe site for an update.
Which camera are you using?
I've a feeling that you'll need to convert your RAW files to DNG files in order for such an old version of PS/ACR to work for you.
You'll find a link to the converter url=http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=106&platform=windows]here[/url].
This conversion is just an extra step and will not damage your RAW files.
If you're using CS4 instead of CS as you indicated, then disregard this info.
I have RAW files from both a Fujifilm S2 Pro and a Nikon D200. Both of these read fine with the copy of CS I had running on my old computer.
Maybe it is a Vista problem because "Adobe does not recommend installing and
running InDesign CS, Photoshop CS, Illustrator
CS, GoLIve CS, or earlier versions of any of these
products on Windows Vista."
I think I'm doomed to a Photoshop upgrade.

Had to google nef files, took me to a site to download plug-in, took only a few seconds to install and solved problem.

that way you should get the latest camera raw for your version without too much trouble.
