Monument Valley this week
Here's a couple shots from our 6-week Southwest trip - taken in Monument Valley the 30th and morning of the 31st. Nice to see so many RMNPers out there the evening of the 30th.

This first shot is of the Mitten Shadow event.

By the way, if you'd like to see my "picture of the day" during this last six weeks, please check my photo blog at http://wyattphoto.blogspot.com.

All the best, Ken

Here's the second shot, taken the next morning near our camp spot at Monument Valley. The lens artifact was so striking, I used this as our "photo of the day" on the 31st. The lens I used was the Canon 70-200 f2.8 L and I've never seen a full rainbow effect like this before. Must be the crummy Canon optics.

Great work, Ken.
The second one is especially striking!

It was a real pleasure meeting you there, too.

Nice job, Ken! I really have to get down there and shoot the mitten shadow...I guess I have to wait until September!

Great stuff, Ken. Can you share some info on the mitten shadow event?

Hi Dave,

Sure thing...got the info right here on the forum some months ago! Apparently, things line up near the end of March and mid-September each year. The next event is Sept. 13th. I'm not actually sure how the dates are predicted, though. Maybe someone else could chime in.

Every year it's the same dates...March 30 & Sept. 13.

Every year it's the same dates...March 30 & Sept. 13. Both shots are nice! That 2nd one's pretty cool even if it is just a lens artifact.

I agree the 2nd one is cool, even though it ain't natural. I like it. I also like the first one. Someday I hope to be there when this happens. It looks a little soft for sharpness here, but it's a beauty.

Both are cool shots, but that second one is really neat! Making lemonade when Mother Nature gives you a lemon! What f stop were you using for the flare shot? It appears from the lens diaphragm flare you were about f4 or f5.6. Were you using a filter? I'll bet your lens barrel was in perfect alignment with the sun at the moment of capture rather than at even a slight angle, this would account for the perfect circle.

Hi Don,

I've never seen that effect before and I suspect you're correct about the alignment of the lens and sun. If you look carefully, though, you'll see the sun is not precisely in the center of the ring. I guess if I'd made a perfect alignment, I'd have gone through a worm hole. The lens used was Canon's 70-200 / f2.8, set to f22 and 1/100th second in manual mode at ISO 200 - no filter.
