I can't get the CS4 trial version to install on my new computer.
Before you say "call Adobe," let me say I already did. The gentleman in Mumbai was very kind and patient, but he couldn't help.
I've downloaded the install files twice (that alone takes a long time) and I've run the installer and extracted the files three times. In every case, I get the message that the install was completed with errors. Launching the programs fails because some components of Photoshop are missing....
I just installed this software on my computer here at work and it went fine.
My home computer is running Vista Home Premium 64-bit, my computer here at work is XP Pro.
Any thoughts? Pete
I'll try to be more specific when I get a chance to look at it again this weekend.
I get the message that the install was completed with errors
Does it give you any more detail about the errors Pete?
Does any part of the install give any other unusual messages?
At what point does it tell you there were errors - only at the end?
And does it say what components are missing causing it to not start?
I just dl the trial for CS4 last night onto a 64 bit laptop and it went well until we were actually installing the updates(using the help menu and updating the install) what I had to do was close down CS4 and reinstall the updates...took awhile but it did work.

I have found that when I go to update Photoshop and Acrobat Reader, I have to close any and all Adobe programs to get the updates to install. The other programs that I have used where the programs have to be shut down, I have had a pop-up asking to close the program about to be updated. Why Adobe doesn't do this, am completely in the dark. The procedure I have developed is to go to HELP and select Update. As soon as the update wizard start running, I close down the program I started it from. Updates don't always run smoothly from this point, but I do get them installed! Does any have a different procedure that may be easier than mine
Did you turn off your anti-virus scanner before doing the download and install? Virus scanner sometimes cause problems.
Are you running the install as a 'Computer Administrator' in Vista? There could be a 'permissions' problem associated with one or more files..
What are the details of the error message(s)?
Have you looked at the "Event Viewer" under Administrative Tools in Control Panel? If you haven't, do so. Look for errors under 'System Errors' and 'Application Errors'. The error properties page for any error will give the exact error message and the error code. You can research these at either Adobe and/or Microsoft Knowledge Base.
I think we need to rule out corrupted file(s). Once you receive the install DVD, see if there is a 'manual uninstall' for CS-4 and perform it. Do a cold reboot. Next, run a registry cleaner such as Registry Mechanic in Safe Mode. Do a cold reboot. Create a Restore Point in Sytem Restore. Disconnect from the internet, turn off your virus scanner and then attempt to install CS4 from the DVD. Let us know how this goes.
I hope this helps, and I certainly feel your pain!

I would also suggest doing a "chkdsk /r". Not sure about Vista, but in XP you can do it from the "Run" dialog on the Start Menu (or you can also run it through Windows Explorer by right clicking the drive and turning all the options on). It will give you a message saying something like "the disk cannot be locked, it will be checked the next time you start windows...". Then reboot, and it will go into a disk check.
This will do a thorough checking of the disk (and it may take a long time) and seek out any bad sectors, so they won't cause any file corruption.
You've got more than a mol of frustration? Geez... But try not to panic even though this can be really frustrating. The files left on your drive are probably no big deal. Since the install didn't go correctly, the uninstall probably won't either. Here's what I would do if I were you, (echoing some of what's above) :
1) Go ahead and delete those files/directories that CS4 left hanging, as long as you're positive they are only for CS4.
2) Run a registry clean to remove any trace of CS4
3) Run the "chksdk /r" to make sure that drive corruption isn't the culprit
4) Disable your AV protection
5) Attempt the install again
6) Let us know how it went
Hopefully getting a bit of a clean start with a registry cleaner and chkdsk will fix the problem. That's usually done it for me in the past. Good luck!

Error UninstallColorProfilesRollback occurs preventing the installer from updating existing color profiles when installing the Adobe Creative Suite 4 product

Pete - Did you happen to look at the knowledge base article? Or see this page on Adobe.com?
That page goes through a pretty heavy duty possible solution, so I may still try what I suggested first. One question - is your account on the computer an administrator account? (I don't think you would have gotten as far as you have if not, but thought I'd check.)
Yes I followed that procedure. It didn't work. And, yes, my account is an administrator account.
Pete D.
And now that I've given up on trying to install CS4, I find that my existing installation of CS no longer reads NEF files. Fortunately, Lightroom still does. This is one terribly tangled web.
Did you happen to look at the Windows "Event Viewer"? We need to see if Windows is throwing unhandled exceptions, or other errors. It is possible that something in Windows is causing the error the Adobe installer reported.
If you do find errors in Windows, be sure to relay the info to Adobe tech support; which, incidentally I think should be your next step. I know you've already talked to them, but I think you need to do so again. This time, politely ask to have your issue upgraded to a higher support tier.
I hope you get this sorted out, Pete! I am having similar issues with a MS development app where a service pack won't install. Like I said, "I feel your pain!"
It is almost to bizarre to believe, but it is true. On a whim, I changed the installation language option (had been trying English(US) ) to English (International). The install worked. I suppose I'll be having colour problems now, but at least the product launches. I really didn't expect this to work, so I almost chose the most obscure language on the list just to see funny words during installation. Man, the would have been a mistake.
Some additional ICC profiles in windows\system32\spool\drivers\color were added, but that was happening even on the unsuccessful installs. I'd go in every time and remove certain ones as instructed by the knowledge base article.
The demo version is CS4 extended, I'm buying just CS4. I sure hope that goes better than this install.

Pete, even if your account is Admin, it still launches the Setup ap as user, which Adobe products hates. Did you specifically right-click on the Setup file and choose Run As Administrator? That's important! If you have, I'll go back and hide in my cave now.
Paul - I wasn't smart enough to do that at the beginning, but after speaking to Adobe I did do that in addition to turning off "User Account Control." Maybe things were already corrupted by the unsuccessful installs. No need to hide in your cave, unless you want to.
I got the install disk I purchased. I "uninstalled" the trial version. Uninstall failed with "some problems. See below." Nothing was below. Ran an uninstall engine that is supposed to remove all traces of a program. The ran the setup file on the new DVD. Install ran, but the program ran as the trial version (which was CS4 extended because Adobe decided that all CS4 trials will be extended). Of course, the serial number I have doesn't work with the extended version! Adobe, you're killing me.
After a bit of poking around the Adobe web site I found a CS4 clean up script. Adobe, this is a clear sign that your software is screwed up.
The clean up script ran.
Finally, the installation of CS4, my copy, ran, accepted the serial number, etc.
Adobe, I don't think I'll ever buy another one of your products.
Thanks Preston.
Sure I'll kick you when necessary.
If a software package is doing what I need, I won't upgrade.
That's how I ended up a couple of generations "behind" in Photoshop.

Well, in Adobe's defense, CS4 installed for me with absolutely no problems, even after having installed the demo (and the Lightroom demo, and the Elements 7 demo). Unfortunately, it's a fact of any product that someone has to be the person with the most problems. Even with companies renowned for being problem free there are issues. I've known people with crashing Macs and lemon Hondas.
So sorry that seems to have been you with Photoshop Pete - that sux, I know. But it won't keep me from buying Photoshop unless it becomes endemic.

I am sorry you ran into such a vexing problem. One would think that a program that costs as much as PS would install without a hitch. Sheesh!
I am glad you got it sorted out.
