In my recent image post 'Glorious' in the Man & Nature gallery I brought up the raw vs jpg debate as I was never happy with the ACR conversion of my raw (NEF) files from my Nikon D80. The color profile was all wrong and I much preferred the color the jpg's produced.
This is probably common knowledge now, but for those of you who shoot raw with a Nikon D80 and use Lightroom to process, the latest version of Lightroom now includes a new color profile called 'Adobe Standard'. This profile is now the default profile for the D80 and is much closer (if not better) to matching the in-camera processing.
I don't know if CS3 or CS4 have this already, but CS2 certainly doesn't. With this new profile I will most certainly shoot raw close to 100% of the time. It's fabulous!! Just thought I'd mention this in case it helps someone.
These profiles in ACR have been a big help for me, as well.
Note that the 'Camera Standard' profile is also a good choice for many. The difference between it and 'Adobe Standard' are subtle, yet there.
CS4 has the Adobe Standard choice in ACR, among others.
Later...I just went to the Adobe site. You can download camera profiles for ACR which include Nikon. The Nikon profiles all have a D2x name, but this does not refer to the D2x camera, but to Nikon's various mode settings for NEF. I have tried a couple of these and they do nice things in ACR. Well worth experimenting with!
Thanks very much John and Philip for your info. Philip, the new version of LR2 has these new profiles for Nikon, and yeah, they are great!!
Cheers,
Dave.
I will suggest to buy a color chart and create profile yourself. It makes a huge difference. I used to create these and sell for 5-10euros...have stopped it though. I may have profiles for D80 as I owned it for about a year. I can mail it to you if you promise a cup of coffee when I come to Australia to see your team is beaten on a boxing day test-match. (This makes the probability of it happening less than 1%, unless the opposition is India. ).
