Spring Ruffed Grouse
Taken yesterday (4/4/09), and yes, we still have a lot of snow! This ruffie has made through the worst part of the winter.

Taken with a Canon 50D, 100-400mm, ISO 400, f/7.1 and @ 1/500th

Very nice mood you've created, Ken. Cold and lonely. Nice lines and I like how the tree sets off the desolation of the rest of the frame.

Nicely done, Ken. The tonal gradations in the snow are perfectly exposed; always challenging. I'm curious how you handled exposure - assuming you didn't have time to check the histogram.

Thanks, Ken. I had been shooting with a lot of snow in the frame for most of the day, so had the camera set for ec +2/3 to overexpose the subject a bit. If I remember correctly (at work and would have to check exif at home) I may have bumped another third knowing the grouse would tend to be underexposed if I wasn't compensating some. No blinkies when I checked the shot afterward, and Highlights/Shadows did a nice job of blending in post processing.

Well done Ken! I really like this shot! As others have said well exposed and I like the composition as well :)

This is excellent, both technically and artistically speaking. Thanks for letting us have a look.
