View from Lake Colchuck w/ B&W version
Taking advantage of the spring conditions (finally!), Margareta and I did a snowshoe trip up to Lake Colchuck in the Enchantments yesterday. This normally easy day trip was made into an all-day trudge by the access road from Bridge Creek Camp being snowed in, and having to break trail some of the way. The lake was of course completely covered and looked like a huge white meadow guarded by the north faces of Dragontail and Colchuck Peaks. All the images I shot were under the midday sun, but after having snowed in Leavenworth just last week, who's complaining.

Sony R1, hand held, 1/1000 @ f/8, some dodging and burning, TK's luminosity masks, Marc's web sharpening.

Great to get out isn't it!

I like the comp here. With the light being harsh, did you try a BW version with the contrast exaggerated? It might be worth playing with.

Man, that's a long walk this time of year. My knees were barking enough dayhiking to the lake in the summer, makes them hurt just thinking about snowshoeing. Nice shot, but the snow and ice sort of flattens and homogenizes the scene to me. I'd go black and white and really contrasty with this due to the lack of color too.

Here is a B&W version...

I'll take the color version, i like the green amidst the black and white. Nicely composed daytime scene. :)

I prefer the b/w version 100 000 times. It adds drama and mystery. It has a soul. The contrasts are enhanced, the lights exposed, b/w absolutely! Not even a bit of doubt.
The color image is just another nice color postcard with no emotional impact. You watch it and forget it.
Only b/w!

Well, I wouldn't say only b/w, but I do think the b/w version of this image does stand out more and have a better feel to it.

I like both. For hard mid-day light this actually looks real good. The composition is simple but effective. My eye flows from the LLHC following the treeline then zags back up the ridgeline. Works real slick.

I think if you go B&W on this you could put some more oomph into the sky. A little meaner looking maybe? It seems a little less powerful than the color version as it stands now.

Looking really good - you captured some great detail!

Marc,

I definately prefer the B&W version here. For me, the color in the color vision is not bold, but rather muted. I find myself looking around for more color that isn't there--which can be distracting. The B&W version gives the image a more comanding yet elegant presence.

You have a great image captured in a truly beautful place!
