Ravens are one of my favourite birds, I love where they live, their intelligence, their beauty, their behaviour, the sounds they make, everything. This picture is enhanced by the falling rain a third ingredient that is so important in a final image.
You're right, the falling rain in the background definitely enhances this photo. Ravens are fantastic birds, and it's good to see them doing so well. When I was living in Cardiff last year, a pair were nesting on the front of the university building, right in the city center, and I saw another pair in Wiltshire in August over the chalk downlands, the first time I've ever seen them in that area.
1/40th has rendered the rain in a very pleasing way plus maintaining sharpness at 700 mm is no mean feat - strong, atmospheric image. Any mirror lock/cable release?
No I didn't use mirror lock or a cable release I am just pretty steady when taking images in low light, this image is razor sharp at 100% and to me proves that you don't have to shoot at high ISO's to get sharp images.

Nice image Danny - agree entirely - the rain makes it
Got a lot myself in falling snow - but to be honest it doesn't suit Ravens as much as the eagles - none of them look this impressive, even shot on the same perch point.
Good strong image imo with bags of appeal.
Now I've blown so much smoke up your a*** I'll round off by saying I hate you even more now
Excellent image, all the stronger for the simplicity of components...raven, branch, rain. Trying not to sound too much like an art critic, basically its a great photo!
That is one lucky perch. Sea eagles, Raven, Jay.....it has it all:) Well done matey. A great shot of this wonderful bird. It's a special place and I can't wait to go back. Well done and keep them coming.
This is just lovely - great light, plumage detail and attitude all combine with rain and background to produce a splendidly evocative image. Fantastic birds ravens, great to see them getting star status here!
Very moody shot, with (anthropomorphising) the dark background and rain seeming to complement the Raven`s brooding nature. Compositionally, I`d like to see the bird slightly higher and just a tad further to the right in the frame.
