I have zero video experience and have a rare opportunity coming up where I would like to get some short video of sage grouse.
Ideally, I'd like to set up a video recorder and let it run while I shoot stills with a D300. So, I've been checking into renting something like a Canon prosumer, and I'm learning about shotgun mics and lenses that are too short.
I looked into the Nikon D90 for really short clips, but that doesn't have an audio Jack, making it quite limiting. The fact that I'd have to buy one is even more of a problem.
So, I would appreciate any suggestions of how to capture some sage grouse video without an enormous learning curve and even larger expense. My time window is the week of 4/20.
Thanks Ron. I was looking at the GL2 for rental - roughly $160 for the time frame I need, which is fine. What would the max lens length be - 35mm equivalent?
I would look into a XL1s or even better the Xl2 with an ef adapter or extender depending on the focal length you are needing.
I have an Xl2 with the adapter, extender, shotgun mic, tripod, etc. The stock lens is a 20x that will accept a 1.6x extender. The ef adapter allows you to use Canon's ef series lenses with a 7.2x in focal length. I use a 70-200mm and a 300mm lens, with the ef adapter making it 140-1400mm + or 2100mm +
Send me the specifics, if the dates are right maybe we can work something out with you using my setup.
