I am leaving 4-16 for Vegas. I have 3 days in vegas. After that I have about 5 days to travel Northern Arizona or were ever the rent-a-car takes us. My wife and I fly back home out of Pheonix. I would love to know some good places to travel to. I can't wait!! Thanks in advance for any great destinations. :wavey:

Oh, and I was wondering if there is anything I should know about airport security and my bag of gear. I'm hoping not to have any problems and plan to put my tripod in the suitcase.

There are so many areas to photograph in N. Arizona that your best bet would be to pick up a copy of 'Photographing the Southwest-Arizona' for help in making the most of your time there.

I'm only a traveler in those parts, so I can't be very detail oriented, but it is one of my absolute favorite places to travel. If you were trying to squeeze some big things in, I would propose this itinerary:

Zion NP (not in AZ, but really close)
Grand Canyon North Rim (presuming its open) or Escalante
Lower Antelope in Page
Sedona

It's all on the way to Phoenix from Vegas...sort of. There's no way you could not have a blast with whatever you decide to do. Good luck.

I agree with picking up a photographing the southwest guide. I would hit Page AZ, Monument Valley and if it hasn't booked up already (you need a permit and they don't issue many), hit the Wave near the UT border. It is an all day hike if you are up for it but well worth it. See my website for photos.

You are in for a treat, if you get to the slot canyons around Page Az. Take your time, use all white balance settings, look up, and zoom in on the details in the sandstone... The locals know of a few hidden canyons too... Ask around.
I spent 10 days over the holidays out there and had the time of my life. I'm going back in a couple weeks..
Have fun!

Page, AZ area for sure; lots there: Lake Powell, slot canyons, not far to Grand Canyon and Horseshoe Bend. Flagstaff to Sedona via the canyon road instead of the freeway and allow for lots of stops! In Phoenix be sure to visit the Arizona Desert Museum; you can easily spend a day there. Have lots of water with you. Carry on all your camera gear if possible and don't get rushed at the security checkpoint because sometimes they want to inspect everything. I haven't flown in awhile, so maybe it's different now... Oh, and not too far from Las Vegas is the Mojave Desert. Might be some blooms left. Extend your trip if you can!

For what it's worth I've never had a problem bringing my tripod carry-on. Good luck getting me to put a 900$, critical piece of equipment in steal-me-land. However, it is rather small.
