Around the Bend
Had some fun in The Dalles last weekend at the Cherry Blossom Bike Race. It's a good place to practice panning for when I photograph wildlife during the year. This image was taken with my Canon 70-200mm + Kenko Pro 1.4x @ 145mm, f20, at 1/20th sec., ISO 100. I know it's not nature, but it's fun.

David,
I think it would be a good shot if the biker wasn't blurry. I don't understand your slow shutter speed and small F stop. I would think that they should have been reversed . Fast shutter speed, wide open lens.

Thanks for the comment Erik. Panning motion shots work best between a 1/15th and a 1/60th of a second, so I shot the gamut on all my pans. That's why the the small F stop at 100 ISO. I wasn't after the rider or the background to be tack-sharp, and wanted the blur for a sense of motion. I also did the reverse for some stop-action images too, but mostly had fun with the pans.

What Erik said. Not exactly nature, but a fun image to view. Brings back memories of when I used to do USCF crits back in the '80's.

The SIngh-Ray Vari ND might have worked here

Cool shot, David! And thanks for the panning techs and advice. I posted a cyclist awhile back on the forum; hope I won't offend by putting it up with my comment. It's in response to Erik's question and offers a comparison to your image with regard to aperture and ss selection for panning. Mine is f8 @ 1/80. I hope you'll show us more examples in this thread from your shoot of the race. I, for one, would like to see 'em.
