Black Crowned Night Heron captured in early morning light at Felsenthal NWR. Light was rather soft and so is the image.

I like the contrast of the smooth bird with the gnarled wood, it makes the bird look even prettier. You've got a lot of really nice birds shots out here. I'm impressed, that's a hard subject to shoot.

I don't know, this looks pretty good to me Daniel. Very complimentary bg and as Dena mentioned the heron plays nicely against the knarled wood of the stump. Well captured!

Another nice shot, Daniel, remind what size lenses you are using for most of your shots?

I think this is very nice Daniel, I really like it. Probably because it is something I've not seen before and it just looks neat on the old wood.
Thanks for sharing it.

Tom - I was using a Canon EF 500 f/4 + 1.4tc with my 40D. It is an amazing lens but I am still learning how to use it to best advantage. I was shooting from a car window. Before shooting I had to turn off the engine. At 700mm, the slight vibrations of the engine affect the quality of the image. Even so I was only able to get within about a 100 yards before it flew off. It was a very skittish heron.

Ditto to all the above. Your shots are so amazing, I'd love to spend a day shooting with you sometime.
Nice image, probably best you had low contrast light. They are tough to shoot in sunlight.
Juvies are a little easier to nail in sunlight.

Ed - Great BIF shot! I haven't seen a juvenile BCNH before. Glad you caught one on the wing. They are rather quick in flight so it is hard to catch them coming toward you! Love the sunlight in the eye on this one. Thanks for sharing.
