This Grey Wagtail did a lot of cleaning up on this rock .... but never came any closer Would have liked a few frame fillers but not to be. Seen it there a few times so may well have another opportunity.
There seems to be a lot of white all over the rocks in this area, possibly some kind of lichen?

Hi Graeme.
Strange white effect on the rock as you say.
I want to say is territory marking by dipper and or Grey wag, but there looks a lot of it ! May be other birds are using it too.
Cheers

Thanks John. There are too many rocks like this one and too few birds I'd say. It's all the way down the river so it has to be something else surely

Nice photo graeme, lovely colours to this bird, they are so quick hope you've seen the dippers again the markings on the rocks may be 'Brain Lichen-Diploicia canescens, they form rosettes up to 5cm across, they are more common in southern britain in nutrient enriched habitats, but the grey-powder crusts look missing and i can only think the birds pick at them for food and the water cleans and leaves them like this, hope this has helped, keep watch as the dippers are 'courting' now and you will see some lovely behaviour, well done on the wagtail
