Female Red Breasted Merganser
1D2n, 600mm is, 1/400s, f6.3, iso 200. Taken as sun broke over hill behind me. No added saturation.

I have never seen these before and a few have appeared for the first time this year on the loch we visit most weekends. The loch is several miles long, and I was very lucky that they decided to come close to me. I had a thrilling session with them and have still to process many – left a card (safely) at the site! The males are more dramatic, but there is something very beautiful about the female. The exposure was a nightmare as the background changes from silver cliffs to black rock to vibrant oak/beech foliage, and part of the water was in shade. Many images were unsuccessful, but it was fun! Critique is always appreciated.

The colouration brought about by the morning light make this image what it is.
Just the job Ian. :toast:

WOW..... only thing is I am not fond of the darker bg to the left, I do appreciate that you do nothing about that, had the bird been looking from a darker area into the slightly lighter it would have been outstanding... hope that makes sense......

Thanks all!

Phil

I see what you mean and I've lightened it a bit on the left. I have loads of very similar images, each slightly different and it's fascinating to hear of people's preferences - my wife and daughter were no help at all!

very nice image Ian, the colours are lovely, perhaps it is just me but it seems a little wonky

Love the colours, not many of them round these parts either, I do see what Jack means, it seems to be going up hill slightly to the left.
