Dead pixels on Canon 1Dmk3 sensor!?

I have been doing some long exposure night photography lately with my mark3 and to my unpleasant surprise I noticed a lot of dead pixels showing in red, blue and green dots all over the sensor. I did not actually count them but there are about 10-15 of those. Whereas on my old 30D I had only 3! Not that it is a very big deal in real terms as they are easily cloned out, but it just is a bit frustrating to find this on an expensive camera body like this. I was wondering if anyone else has found out the same?

Well not the MarkIII, but my 5D II had 250+ on mine. I returned it after 4 days, they sent me a new one week and half later. I was really upset, mine didn't cost as much as yours, but 3 grand is still 3 grand, and surely all those dead pixels should not have been there. Sorry to hear, it does suck when we spend the money on items and they are messed up from get go.

Vincent,

I've done a 3 hour exposures with my 1D III and I haven't had an issue. With the 5D II I haven't seen an issue yet either. I found with my old 5D that it was a huge issue and it was even worse with my old 20D. To me, it seems like they are improving quality control with the newer cameras.

I'm sorry that your having that issue, but as you said it's only 10-15 pixels so that's not horrible! But I do agree it that we shouldn't have these issues on such expensive equipment. I actually carry around a film body with me specifically for long exposure night photography, that way I don't have to worry about draining batteries and I can do much longer exposures. Maybe shooting film for your night shots is worth a try if you don't mind carrying a spare body around.
