Here is an image from my recent trip to GSMNP. These falls are very close to Gatlinburg and just a short hike off of the Roaring Fork Motor Trail which is awesome all by itself. The morning that my buddy and I were there we saw no one else at all. Cloudy, foggy, and misty. Very unworldly. Two things about that day I remember-the presence of horse tracks all over the trail, and the fact that I got to my shotting location with all my gear.

BTW...best I was able to do to bring out any detail from the grotto. I did not think to take two exposures and blend them. I will look closer at what I have and see about that.
As you mentioned, two blended exposures would have helped with the detail in the shadows - hope you are able to find something that will work...a little sharpening might help here too.

This is one of those photographic situations where a split ND mounted vertically over the falls & pool may have balanced the exposure. Just another option for those of us who still lug around a bunch of split ND's for old times sake.
Boy, now there's a technique from the old days ....
Nice look. You must have caught it at a good time if it was just you.
When I hiked up there we had people running all over the place. All mine had people lurking under the falls except the one where I was the blankety blank lurking Under the falls.
When were you there? I am heading over end of next week.
