Having a great time here! The scenery is breathtaking, the food and wine are delicious and the people are wonderful. (Is that enough superlatives??)
The biggest news is that I dropped my new Canon 5D2 and 24-105 lens onto the rocks and into the water at the base of Matai Falls. Both are ruined, not working anymore, and I will have to send them to the Canon factory when I get back home to Denver. Hopefully at least the camera can be repaired (not much hope for the lens)... if not, time for an insurance claim. Fortunately Monte has loaned me his original 5D to use for the rest of the trip, and it's working out fine.
Internet access here is limited and generally expensive, so I have posted a few small pics at my
Will post another update (with a more detailed trip report) and more photos as soon as possible. Wishing everyone well back in Colorado and around the Rocky Mountain West!!
Nat, I'm so sorry to hear about your camera! What a terrible time to have that happen!!! Glad to hear that Monte had an extra camera for you! Enjoy your time in this amazing place!
Wow, if those are only the appetizers, I can't wait for the main course! Sorry to hear about your camera and lens, what a horror story. Take thousands of shots! We all (exccept for Jack Brauer who already spent like 2 months there, may he be cursed!) want to see everything from New Zealand.

Some envy-inducing results, Nat. A real bummer about the camera...I can relate! Good to hear that Monte's got ya covered. I look forward to seeing more from both you guys.

That sucks about the camera. I know you're a fan of Erik S., but I think you're going a little too far to try to imitate him . I dropped and destroyed my ND filter in New Zealand and was peeved, so I can't imagine losing a camera and lens. I only had a week in New Zealand, so I look forward to seeing what I missed. I like Matai Falls and Kaka Point best (ha ha, you said "Kaka".)

Nat, sorry to hear about your camera. You're not missing much, except a huge SNOWSTORM....heh... keep shooting!
WOW, sorry about the gear, I can't even imagine the pain but glad a friend stepped in to help you out. Sunrise at Kaka point is incredible!!! And yes, I said Kaka too

Bummer about the 5dII, but it looks like that hasn't affected your spirits too much since you have a nice collection of photos already. I'm a fan of the Moeraki Boulders and Matai Falls photos. NZ is already high on the places I'd love to visit, this just makes me want to go even more.
That is a bummer about the 5Dii, hopefully it can be repaired!. I like your taster of NZ so far, you have stopped by most the places I did during a 2007 trip. Matai falls is cool, I liked the lushness of the Catlins area!. Have a great rest of your trip!.

Nat, I am very sorry to hear about your camera mishap, but the shots are amazing! New Zealand is one of my dream destinations and it looks like you captured it very well!!!
