It seems that just about every nature photographer in the midwest has attended one (or more) of your workshops Tim. I think that just about everyone who posts on CSNP has taken a workshop from you.

Are you still keeping track of the people who attend your workshops? If yes then what's the total count of attendees up to by now?

Just wondering how big the army of photographers you've trained is.

Hey Wayne, while I do like to take as much credit as I can, fact is there are still quite a few very talented photographers around here who have done great on their own without any help. I much prefer it that way - if everyone had been through my workshops already then I would be out of business, ha! You are going to make me work a little bit to figure out how many total, but thankfully we have been keeping track, at least for the past ten years - the first 11 or 12 years I don't have records for.

.........this is a spinning ball.........or hourglass............while I hunt up that info.......................................

Looks like in the past ten years the number is over 1,200 different photographers from 17 different states have come through one or more of my workshops. Of those probably 150-200 have been serious photographers.

When I switched from teaching a film-based workshop to a digital-based workshop the percentage of photographers who shot really good images during the workshop went up from about 20% to 70% plus - overnight. Digital really has been a huge advantage in taking photographers to the next level in a big hurry.

This coming year I will be moving more towards DVD-based teaching, and in fact my entire nature photography workshop and digital workflow will be available on DVD - in fact there will be a LOT more info available there then I'm able to cover during our weekend workshops. (There will be some really nice how-to videos available - I'm just about done with all of the testing and hope to have this stuff out by summertime.)

I'm glad you reminded me of all this - I've got a 54" print I made last night that I need to go roll up to take with me to the workshop to show what can be done by stitching a few images together (that's not something you can show on a DVD so in-person workshops will still be the best, but there are only so many weekends available). The technology continues to amaze me, and in fact I'm teaching three or four entirely new techniques now that I could not have done until recently, and I expect that trend will continue.

By the way, I'm going to be a student in five workshops myself this year - always so much more to learn! And, of course, always more equipment to buy........

Hey Clayton - time for #5 - we've got a lot of new stuff to learn, and a great new weekend facility too!

Yup, I am working for Uncle Sam - you should have seen the bill I got yesterday...

I've been to one big and one little workshop. I feel like I got way more than I paid for in each case. I am sure I will go again in the future with Tim but I've got a hankerin' for the West/Northwest so I am looking out that way in the future. I have been a good ambassador for Tim her in NE Arkansas as I have prodded two other people to go visit with Tim and learn some stuff. And now that they have I get to have some company on my infrequent trips to shoot!

(I'm hopefully going to learn that "stitching" technique Tim!)

I can't wait for some workflow DVD's. Do you have any ideas on pricing for those yet?

There always filled up by the time I get around to checking on them.

At least Tim announces dates well in advance. Lots of others who do workshops do not announce their dates until much closer to the time of their workshops. Makes it tough for people like me who have to put in for all their vacation for the next year in August of this year. And trying to match dates on these workshops with years past does not work well.

Tim-
Harmony Mountain Retreat (and the cabin next door) are where we hold our annual, adults only, Buffalo Flotilla.
It is a great place. You are the reason I have to book a year in advance these days.
We will be there again in two weeks (first weekend in May every year) drop by for a Starbucks (or a CR) if you are in the neighborhood.

Hey Clayton, thanks for the invite! I'll be off in another state that weekend learning some new photoshop techniques or I would be there looking for my mocha handout for sure. Most certainly a step up from our previous workshop digs, although I'm finding there is still not enough room - we had to put four staff folks in the cabin this past weekend since the lodge was all full with students!

Don't know about any pricing yet on the DVDs since I'm not done with them, but probably about the same cost as a couple rolls of film. Thank goodness we don't have to pay for film and processing every time we push the button anymore! I know some folks complain about the cost of this lens or that body or a good tripod or ballhead, but holy cow these things are peanuts in relation to what film and processing costs used to be.

I hope to post some new workshops for 2010 sometime early this summer once all of the ducks are in a row and quacking...
