I stumbled across this interesting computer tool today and figured I would share it here. Best of all its free. It combines a sunrise/sunset and moonrise/moonset time and direction calculator with Google maps. With this you can visually display the direction of sunrise/sunset and moonrise/moonset from any location you select on Google Maps. Seems like this could be really useful for preplanning the best time of the year/day to photograph sunrise/sunset from a specific location.

That's pretty cool! The sample map on that page is of the Bear Lake area and so I checked and sure enough he's from Boulder. Wonder if he knows about this group. This could be a very helpful tool for me. Thanks Doug!

He's got some familiar names in his photo links, but I don't know if he knows Jesse, Jack, Dave R., etc., or just admires their work. Thanks for the tip!

Wow this is a great use of a virtual globe app. I'm a map geek....

I can't seem to get this one to work. :frown:
I have Google maps at the spot I want to target, and I have TPE open.
It shows a blank grey screen and I don't have a clue as to how to get the map on the screen. I get the following message after about a minute:

"Initialization failed: please check the API key,
swf location, version and network availability"

Can anyone help? This app. is just what I've been looking for some time!

Hi John

This seems like an opportune moment for my first post - I just signed up to the group at the invitation of Rajeev.

Sounds like the problem you're having with TPE is that the program can't connect out to the internet. That API key message is Google Maps trying to make sure that the program is legit and registered with them.

If you're still having trouble, ping directly and we'll try to work it out.

Rgds,

Stephen

Stephen, that is one amazing program! Thanks for making it available to the public! It is going to be such a help to me! We're glad to have you here on the forum. I don't think you'll find a better group of photographers anywhere.
