I finally got around to getting a few rolls of Velvia developed and scanned from the past few months. I stumbled upon this image in that pile. This was taken the morning after one of my igloo camping trips above Lake Hayaha, RMNP.
I might just like it because it shows the insane blizzard-like conditions at the ice-covered lake and I think it also may have a little of the "Stensland" feel to it
This was captured with Nikon N60, Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 and Velvia 50 (I forgot to record my settings). I only adjusted the curves and sharpened for web in CS3 but wanted to keep the Velvia feel so I didn't mess with anything else.
Let me know if I'm crazy for liking it.
Thanks!

Hmmm, I'm on the fence, Aleksandra. I like the sunstar and the framing of the trees. But the view of the lake is distant enough that at first glance I'm not quite sure what I'm looking at. If you hadn't mentioned the wind and ice, some of the blowing snow could look like lens flare. For me, the lack of detail in the silhouetted trees and the background leaves little to draw me in. It does look cold!
I bet there is a lot more detail in the slide than what you got from the scan.

You shouldn't be so hard on yourself. I don't think this has a "Stensland" feel to it at all. In fact, I kind of like this shot. I'm on the fence too, but I think the sunstar turns this from an average shot to a pretty good shot. I do wish I could see more of the tree on the left side...I think that would give it more balance. And just showing a little bit of the tree can be distracting. But I'm not sure if cropping out that tree would improve it, as that would make it less balanced.
I'm on the fence too with this one. For me the right hand tree is a little dominant, and as a viewer am wanting to see more of what's beyond - lake etc. The sunstar does help though, and is a nice addition. This image is no doubt a great record of you trip up to the igloo area though!.
You know what i do like about this shot is the combo of the subject, composition and very blue overall processing really convey a feeling of cold. Really cold. I wouldnt print it for my walls but it is an effective image.

I would at least keep it for my memories file. I agree, I would like to have seen more of the tree on the left for more balance, but I do like the sunstar and the overall blue hues.
