I didn't want to hijack Craig's grey wagtail thread with this, so started a new thread about the Nikon CD error.
I've had the CD error on my D3. I stopped using the SanDisk UDMA card that I had been using and it has not re-occurred. I'd be interested if to learn whether others have substituted the card in use when the error message occurred and whether or not the error has re-occurred with the replacement.
Hope you're well!
Mine was just a standard Err message on the top plate, took one picture which was a good stop to two stops overexposed the Err message appeared on the top plate and the camera locked up,had to turn camera on and off to reset but every shot after that was the same.
Nikon replaced shutter unit and apron under warranty, looking on the web there seem to be three Err message problems, mine, yours and one relating to dirty lens contacts!
Can't fault Nikon's service very swift!

Hi , yep I've lived with it for 6 months since new .Cd stands for Card Drive. First off I thought it was reused cards from a D200 and 300 ( transcend ) but alas new sandisc III's and kingstons 8 gig's do the same . It occurs more when the cards are used dual slot with overflow , but thats no guarantee. Its happened once in the last 400 shots and an eject of the prime one slot card and refit cures it .Alex at Nikon Pro claims its a new one on them but alas its all too common I find and I am sure Nikon are aware of it . A visit to Focus 09 had Nikon Service Engineer check it over and he said that it wasn't something they had come across before ,it would need to go back for at least a month. Yeh right .The error can occur without any pics taken just one second ok then a focus later CD err. I have learned to live with it but one day I will be kicking myself . Andy Astbury has had it happen to him if I recall whilst doing Hares .In the first instance it was doing it all the while .However a firmware upgrade has slowed its repeat and I find its not too much of a bug or hinderance , but there will always be that one occassion when.....
Hope this helps.Mark
