An intense sunset shot from last fall, the colors were spectacular. Unfortunately I didn't have anything to work with for a fg, so I focused on the colors and left the distant shoreline go black.
Wondering what you think of this, worth putting into a portfolio or just a nice sunset shot to have on file?
You might try a pano crop of this putting the reflection of the trees towards foreground. While the colors are very nice, I think your hunch is correct in needing something for the eye to focus on.
Kevin, it's a very fine image. I like the color and the comp. IMO, whether it goes into a "portfolio" depends on your portfolio target audience and the other images (of which I know you have many) in your portfolio. For example, most of what I sell are local images which I market and sell locally. If I took this image in the local MetroParks (Youngstown, Oh), I'd definately have it on my website, include it in my portfolio that I use for local marketing, and probably use it in prints and/or notecards that I sell in the local venues where I market my images. On the other hand, if this was an image I took, say, in Michigan, I may not have it in my portfolio or have it printed even though it's an excellent image of a spectacular sunset. I hope this answer wasn't too confusing!

I agree about the lack of FG, but like the colors generally. There is something about the overall image that appears harsh that I can't quite put my finger on, like a bit too much saturation.
Thanks for all the replies.
Sounds like the lack of fg is a problem here, I was afraid of that.

A beautiful image and well executed, Kevin. As mentioned, there isn't a lot to hold the eye here. I tend to keep this type of image for use as elements in photo art.
