I would appreciate any advice on good shooting locations in the Maya Riviera area. I'll be staying near Tulum for a few days, and can probably sneak out for some sunrises while my wife sleeps off her hangover!

The Tulum ruins are in a picture postcard setting close to the beach.
A perfect sunrise locale, IMO.
To avoid all of the fees involved with parking and visiting the ruins, drive a bit south of the ruins to an access to a public beach. From there, you can hike north up the beach for about a mile to a lighthouse. The south edge of Tulum is about 500 ft. or so from the lighthouse.

Alternatively you can pay the fees and contribute to the maintenance of the area - an ideal site for vandalism.
You should check out the cenotes as well. El Gran Cenote along the road to Coba was pretty spectacular when I saw it about 6 or 7 years ago. Things change quickly down there so ask around but it might be worth the side trip. Cenote Dzitnup will have a nice beam of light into it this time of year. I haven't been back there since I got serious with photography but remember thinking it was pretty spectacular when I saw it 10 years ago. You could visit it on a trip to Chichen Itza if headed that way. Also the dirt road through the Sian Kaan nature reserve to Punta Allen has some pristine sections of coastline near the end. Have fun!
