Hi I'm thinking of going to Union College in lincoln and I was wondering are there any good photo spots near lincoln, nature, wildlife, avian, scenic and historic landmarks? Anything within a 200 mile radius would be great.

Hi Chad,

I assume from your question that you're headed to Lincoln to become a Husker. Congrats and good luck with your studies. A little more info on what you like to shoot may be helpful. Do you favor landscapes, wildlife or other?

I'm not familiar with specific locations but Nebraska has a number of State Parks that will yield excellent shooting. And a 200 miles radius you can even be in the Flint Hills of Kansas if you like shooting landscapes. Nebraska has a wealth of avain opportunities, especially during the migrations.

Give us a little more info and hopefully we will be able to get you started with a few good locations.

Hi Chad,

I grew up about ninety miles straight east of Lincoln, and went to UN-L's Cedar Point Biology Station for a summer (B.D. - "before digital").

There are a lot of beautiful places in the prairies, but you have to look hard and have an open mind. Additionally, you have to also look for the small, simple things.

Along the western side of Iowa, there are the Loess Hills that extend about all the way from the Missouri border to Sioux City. There are a LOT of very picturesque places tucked away in these hills. They've been considered for National Park status, but the western Iowans would prefer someway to keep them in a conservancy status without the government's assistance (actually, they'd prefer to keep them on the tax rolls some way...).

Check out the various state parks, especially along the Platte River... There's a large private park just south of Omaha that might have some great possibilities... But, I can't recall the name...

Lots of migratory birds in the spring and fall. Check out DeSoto Bend National Wildlife Refuge, less than an hour north of Omaha. You'll be near to the Missouri Flyway for various geese & ducks, and there's also the sandhill cranes that stop along the Platte.

There are lots of great places in western and northwestern Nebraska for when you have longer periods of time available:

And, remember that you'll have some terrific weather to photograph - tornadoes, blizzards, thunderstorms, rainbows, etc.

Enjoy,

Tim!

Chad,

I also had another idea... Check out The Nature Conservancy and see what properties they might hold in Nebraska, etc. They're an excellent resource for landscapes and much less well known than most state parks...

Good luck,

Tim!
