Hawfinch
Was in 2 minds whether to post this or not. It was one of those cases where the bird came too close to where I was with the camera, so uncropped on width.
C & C welcome.

Hi Kim
There's a lot you can do whith this. Lucky so and so.
Hard birds to get. Is it full frame ? I assume so.
The whole thing needs softening a bit - not focus but levels. I,ll have a play
Cheers

Nothing wrong with the size IMO, but as John says, there is a lot more to come from this shot. The colours look a bit dowdy and hawfinches are nothing if not colourful. You done the hard bit and some more work on the processing will make this a cracker.

From the shadows it looks like taken at mid day so the harsh and contrasty light is doing you no favours. Female hawfinch are slightly dowdy looking compared to the males which I think this is

I wish I had the problem of hawfinches coming too close. Lovely shot, nits already covered.

agree that a bit of processing could help this shot, but a potentially very nice shot. I've never even managed to see a Hawfinch...

Impressive bird. Was it coming to bait?
Posted by Kim Connolly on April 29, 2009 at 1:22 PM
Hi thanks for the comments and suggestions. Yes it is a female and it was taken at mid-day.No it was not coming to bait, although it was close to a feeding station for tits etc. This year it was a totally unexpected visitor to this area. The only cropping was a little off the top.
