Cant seem to find the right AF settings for this combo. Lens "hunts" way too much on both still and flying subjects to the point it just stops and sits unfocused. What AF settings are people using for this lens???

Dave, do you have the lens set on FULL? That might be the problem.

I'm using the 200-400 f4 with a D300 and haven't had difficulty with the auto-focus. These are the settings I'm using:
a1 AF-C priority selection Release+focus
a2 AF-S priority selection Focus
a3 Dynamic AF area 21 points

Especially in low light, the closer to the center you have the selected focus point the better your chances of getting the focus to lock on.

Hi Dave,

For flight work and that combo, I use 51-3D set up. Use center sensor for best results as noted above. I used this set up in Homer, AK with the eagles recently (actually there were two of us using this setup), make sure you acquire first---produced 75-80% 1:1 tack sharp. If you don't get on the subject, use the "bump focus" trick (tap it). I had no problem with this and the lens seemed to respond appropriately.
