Hi,
Has anyone had any expirience with a Nikon 70-200mm VR with either a Nikon 1.4x or/and 1.7x TC. If yes what are the results please.
Thanks,
Simon.

I've tried all three TC-E from Nikon: 1.4, 1.7, 2. The 1.4 looks very clean, the x2 starts to lose sharpness. I settled on the x1.7 because it's a good compromise. Keep in mind it eats up 1.5 stops of light.
Thanks Kent,
I am trying to decide between either option (A) 80-400mm VR, or option (B) start with the 70-200mm 2.8 VR and use it together with the TC until I could purchase a 300mm prime.
So the light loss would not really make a difference.

The 70-200 VR Nikkor works well with the 1.4X TC14E, but not quite as sharp and contrasty as the 300 EDIF f/4 Nikkor. However, you gain VR capability with faster and closer focussing (1.5m vs 2.5m) with the 70-200 and 1.4X TC. This, and the convenience of carrying only one moderately heavy lens, probably justifies it. The 80-400 is too slow (optically and AF) for my purposes and that's why I didn't consider it as an option.
Simon, the 70-200 VR is fast and responsive. Very good results with the 1.7TC. I also use it with Canon D500 for closeups (the downside when using the D500) is that you have to position the front of the lens 17.5" from the subject). But still far better results because of the DOF than the 60mm macro I also have.
