Wednesday night was one of the clearest evenings on the Coast that I can ever recall. Not a breath of wind or a cloud to be found anywhere. I headed out to Cape Arago just to get out and take a walk; not expecting much in the way of photo opportunities. I ended up taking a little siesta on this grassy hillside watching the world go by for a few hours, and snapped this one as the sun broke the horizon.
This isn't a spectacular shot by any means, but it shows the character of the area and the effect that the usually howling wind has on the flora here. It's all either short and stubby, or twisted and gnarled. Kind of ironic for the peaceful evening that was at hand.
Good use of color and nicely exposed, Aaron. There seems to be a lack of a central focal point in the image, imo. Though the elements of the image do work in harmony; I think the flowers are the most unique aspect of the composition and should have been given more emphasis in the composition through a closer/lower perspective. I think in doing so, the gap of green grass between the flowers and the trees would have also been de-emphasized. Perhaps a broader attention to the ocean could have also been given.Regardless, it's still a nice take.
Thanks for the detailed feedback Trevor. I appreciate it, and agree completely. When I took the shot, it felt pretty good, but when I got home I was a bit disappointed in the lack of a mid ground subject. That's why I posted here, and not ESS. I'll keep an eye on the vegetation here and see if any more flowers pop up soon for a more filled out take on the scene. Composition options are pretty limited though. Up the hill and you are in the brush, and down a few feet, and its over the cliff. Thanks again.
Hi, Aaron– I agree with what Trevor said. I'll dare to say that probably not much of a move in position is necessary to achieve a significantly different look. Perhaps just a little different angle of view from the very same place? Anyway, it'll be cool to see what you come up with, because it looks like a scene with a lot of potential. The light is great, the flowers a treat.
