Near to Alicante is a large area of saltpans at Santa Pola which in previous years had a good mix of birds on it, greater flamingo, avocet and black winged stilt and the rare marbled duck, purple swamphen and a whole host of small waders. So I naturally made a beeline for it on day one. Up at some ungodly hour and on site before sunrise. But this year all there was was a huge swarm of mosquito and as a result I got bitten to death having forgotten my DEET. After 10 minutes I gave up and made a hasty retreat to the car for a re-think.
By contrast 5 minutes away at Le Pinet is a smaller saltpan operation which has also been turned into a conservation area and proved to be a bit of a goldmine avian wise. Nothing really rare but its secluded nature with little disturbance allowed some reasonable "on the hoof" photography.
It really shows the vagaries that water levels can make in these areas as to how attractive they are to the wildlife
Hi Mike you certainly get about ,,I love these birds and brings back memories of when I was in Spain photographing them, nice sharp image and reflection a bonus
