Sorry to bore you all with yet another "bird in a pond" shot but as the yanks say " That's what I do "
It's all I can do really. If I could get hold of a 600mm anti shake rocket launcher for less than a few grand (say 10 quid) I might try a bit of stalking - but I doubt it. I'd need a golf cart to get around.
Just joking really -with all the time on my hands I can slip away down to the pool hide and have a snooze and wait till the tea's ready !!Hope you like this one. taken yesterday.
Usual pool set up.
( I am getting bored with typing it !)Cheers

I like your puddle shots, I have drawn from your example and also learned a good deal from your efforts keep it up. I was a proud owner of a Brownie 125 but couldn't afford the film. Now fifty years later a new world. So I'm a restart.
Thanks Barry
Glad you like it.
They,re not to everyone,s taste as you can see but I like to be different !!
I,m determined to reach my 50 species at a puddle one day!
Cheers

Lovely shot John. Our local 'yaurlins' just lurk in dense bushes - I've never yet managed to get a clear shot of one. Snooze, tea and waiting sound fine!
Thanks again
- but I am really intrigued as to why this pic should have twice as many views as the ones either side of it. Any ideas ? - I am sure the title "yellow hammer" is not that attractive surely?
The relationship between the number of views and the number of comments is really beginning to interest me on this forum. If I was really naieve I would suggest that the pic is so perfect that no one can find anything to say about it. But I know that is rubbish, and not the case - so what is it ?
Someone out there must have an answer.
Cheers

If an image has 100 views, for instance, it doesn't mean it's been viewed by 100 different people. It may have been, or it could have been 10 people have have looked 10 times, or 50 people have looked twice. I think you'll generally find that people return to an image several times to see what others have said about it. So, if there's an interesting, or perhaps contraversial discussion going on, the image or topic will get lots of views because people are returning to see what's been said and to follow the discussion.
I know I enjoy reading other peoples comments. If for instance I'm busy editing images on the computer I'll often have the UKNPN page open as well, everytime I want a minutes break from editing, I'll maximize the web page, click on Reply to see the latest replies and read any new comments. So if an image has twenty comments, for instance, and those twenty people that have replied are also interested in reading others replies then it's possible an images' views could be 400 but it's only actually been viewed by just twenty people.
I guess with birds being such a popular subject on the forum they'll often get more attention than other subjects, such as insects, perhaps, hence the greater number of views on your Yellowhammer compared to Des's beetle.
As to the ratio between views and comments, I guess a lot depends on when an image is posted. The weekends can sometimes be quiet, probably because people are out with the camera or busy with family stuff. So many people might pop in just to have a quick look but leave any commenting to when time isn't so precious, i.e. Monday morning at work.
An interesting question John. certainly you will get more views posting foxes, barn owls and hares than for instance grey squirrels, tawny pipits or corn buntings. Views and comments are inextricably bound up with subject matter, photographer's name, and day of the week that you post. I wouldn't worry about it unduly. It's human nature. Eric
Interesting points both, which I hadn't thought about.
Thanks.
It,s not the comments I am worried about it,s the fact that some pics (not only mine by any means )just seem to get an extraordinary number of views and sometimes very quickly.

Hi John ,first off pic.... great detail and nicely positioned in the frame.
The lurkers. Yep that what they are called and really quite common in this field .Its the view and dont contribute brigade . The refreshing of a page will add to the tally of views if it operates in the same way as other sites .As Justin and Eric says the ratios are nothing to set a stall out by .Other 'community' posting sites do tally the views and comments and place merit on the different attentive viewers but as with these sites a bare naked lady will get top views but not really many comments . I'm sure that the name attracts here and the refreshing of the page will bring rise to an extroadinary number of views from lurkers . A pen tablet can, if used as a mouse ,refresh by clicking on the side button and that may be adding to the tally ,nothing to get hung up about on .
Of course John, if you have a habit of posting lots of shots that people like, that would make future posts more popular. From the school of the bl***ing obvious I know, but you perhaps needn't look any deeper than that.

Hi John,
Love this one, comp is spot on for me and like the natural setting. What is the species tally for the pool so far by the way?
Lewis.
Lewis-at this one and another pool I had a mile or two away is something like 48. There's a few to go yet.
