I'm driving to Sante Fe, NM (via Colorado) in the next few days to spend a couple of weeks and wondered whether anyone had some "don't miss these" locations I should plan to catch with my camera. I like the landscapes best but enjoy buildings and alleyway scenes also. Thank you.
Jim, I don't know about Santa Fe, but if your going through Colorado you will probably be on 160 hiway. I would strongly recommend going to the Sand Dunes, especially at this time at this time of year because the creek should be flowing through the sand. Sunset is the best time of day to be there for pictures but anytime is interesting. I had even thought of going out there myself this weekend until I remembered that this Sunday is Mother's Day.
Hi Jim,
Canyon Rd. in Santa Fe has a lot of unique adobe doorways, gates, chilli peppers, etc. It's easy to find, ask anyone locally, and it's sprinkled with art galleries. You can wander down the side streets and the VERY narrow old streets in that area and get some interesting shots.
The town square sometimes has an Indian market where they sell their wares, and that's interesting. St. Francis Cathedral nearby is very pretty and Loretto Chapel has a "mysterious" staircase. It's spiral, made entirely of wood and has no visible means of support.
All of these are within a mile or so of each other and driving around there is easy.
Sounds like you're going to have a great trip, good luck!
Don't forget Santa Fe Opera. The location itself is quite scenic in all directions. Georgia O'Keefe has painted the stand of poplars that border the parking area that was used in one of the Opera's posters. It is part of the larger Santa Fe scene.
The foothills and Ski Areas NE of Santa Fe are worth investigating if you have the time. If you like action images, find out where the Mountain Bikers and hang gliders are hanging out.
There is an old Pueblo nearby as well. It is still inhabitated so be respectful of the residents if you go there.
Frankly, you could spend the Summer in Santa Fe and not exhaust the scenic possibilities. Now that we've given you such "valuable" advice, we expect to be repaid with lovely photos. Looking forward to seeing them!
If I get back there I'm going back up to see this thing at daybreak. The sun peeking through the old pillars should make many people think I sneaked over to England. It's on a hilltop above town.

There is also a pueblo hotel which is georgeous as the sun is going down.
