I have been contacted by a television production company inquiring about the use of one of my images for a television production.

Here is the usage request :

"This photo would be used for a documentary on the History Channel. I would need the rights to be All-media (excluding theatrical), worldwide, in perpetuity including in-context advertising and promo rights."

I am familiar with some of the online pricing calculators but am not quite sure how to fit this request into their parameters. Some of my attempts have yielded figures ranging from $800 for an editorial based request to $6800 for an advertising based request.

The image is mainly of scientific interest and has no advertising appeal beyond the promotion of the program so the $6800 quote seems way too high.

I would appreciate any input with experience in this type of request.

Thanks,
Joe.

Joe, your best bet is to check with a few stock agencies such as Getty or Alamy. Go through all the steps of wanting to license an image, except for the final step of actually purchasing. This should give you a fairly close figure to work with.

Alamy is how I worked up the figures that I quoted above. The problem is classifying this request within the parameters in the menus as it can lead to a wide range of values depending on the selections. In any case, I had to send a response so I have gone with my gut instinct.
