I have used imagers in the past for cards and other items with good results. I would have no problem using WHCC or Mpix for cards based on my use of their other products I have used. I haven't looked at WHCC but I know Mpix does short runs which I would recommend for a first run then ordering quanity if you like them.
My club has been using Vistaprints for several years and we have never considered changing printers. The question is always "Do we need more cards?", not "Should we look somewhere else?". A couple of members use them because of our positive experience with them.
I actually print my own. They are one-sided, white matte, clean edge, Avery product 8870. I think the quality compares well, but I did go through a few design iterations before I was happy with the results. It is very simple - a waterfall on the left plus contact and product information on the right.
I have done a couple of orders from Mpix and been happy with the results. I would just caution no matter who you use, just make sure you get your text completly inside the outlines their software provides with a little extra room to spare.
I heard overnightprints.com was good, and went with them, I've been very happy. You can even get the profile they print with so you know exactly what your file will look like - when printing business cards that's a nice treat!
I would stay away from the extraordinarily cheap ones (I think it was Vistaprints, & that kind of offer where you basically just pay shipping, that I had trouble with). I had never gotten much junk email (spam, whatever) until I ordered business cards from them. The clincher was, I suppose, that both my email and address were present on the form for the business card. Right after that, spam increased exponentially to where I eventually had to give up the address. I'm convinced the only business they are really into is selling addresses. I did not read the fine print very well either. Just be careful. I agree with suggestions to just print them yourself. Or wait til you see a good bargain at a local shop.... they run deals now & then.
I felt like Vistaprints was cheap, and that none of their templates look very good or professional. If you can design your own card, I'd put in a HUGE recommendation for www.clubflyers.com.. They use a really thick card stock as standard, and the colors look just right on mine.
Well, I print my own on Avery glossy clean edge. They have gotten good reviews by potential and established customers and are relatively inexpensive. I can also print a batch at will any time.
I've also printed my own cards. The great thing is as Ed mentioned you can print any amount you want. This is great especially if you change any information such as E-mail address etc. your not stuck with a bunch of cards.
We use Vistaprint for all our business cards, brochures, etc. Have been for years with excellent luck. It helps that my spouse is a graphic designer. The only increase in spam we've noticed after working with them is we get e-mailed notices of discounts and freebies, which for our purposes really isn't spam at all since we take advantage of the offers from time to time.
We also use WHCC for the lion's share of our photo/products printing with excellent results and would have no trouble ordering business cards through them.
