Danby Low moor and scaling reservoir is half an hour max on A171, take the left hand single track road up to Danby beacon - good location for lapwing, golden plover, curlew and red grouse - its where I go when up north visiting my children - several quite roads cross the moor from here over through Danby and onto the higher moors so you can tootle about shooting from the car.
Its Nick's neck of the woods so he may have some better ideas
I'm more to the West Mike - that's more like Wayne's stomping ground (when he's not lurking around mine!).
Unfortunately he's over trying to catch Mexican Flu in Florida at the moment, so you'll not get an answer from him (unless he's found a free wi-fi spot over there).
The Moors and the areas around Danby & Scaling Dam are probably your best bets at the minute as the waders should be up there on breeding territories.
BTW - watch out for speed camera vans tho' - especially if you use the Helmsley-Pickering-Sutton Bank road. They get a lot of bikers out on weekends and like to speed-trap them.
I call the stokesly to helmsley road red route one, after the underwater canyon bit in the hunt for red october, it's so twisty turny, but great on a bike!
As well as the previous sugestions, bempton cliff's are just south of scarborough, not been myself yet but well worth it I hear. I'm over the west side of the moors, and take my grouse images up near osmotherley, might be a bit far over for you though.
