I've been trying to add a photo to my profile on PP.net and cannot seem to make it work. There are no instructions or size guidelines in the form where profiles are edited or beside the "upload photo" spot. I did read somewhere else on the site that profile photos must be under 15 Kb, and that's also stated when my upload fails. So I'm sure that's the problem (so far, everything I've tried to upload has been 29 kb or more). But I can't seem to get any of my photos to total fewer kb than 29. I've never needed to make any photos so tiny, not even avatars that I've made for many other sites.

I've tried downsizing my avatar to make it that small. However, even when I've tried saving a jpg that was either 200 x 200 pixels, 100 X 100 pixels, or even as small as 50 X 50 pixels-- saved at lowest quality, the files all ended up being 29 kb or more. Any suggestions would be welcome. I see folks with fairly large profile photos that do not look like they're low quality, so clearly there's something I'm doing wrong. The way I've been trying to do it is in PS (CS 2)... I go to "Image Size", then put in constrained proportions of 50 X 50 pixels (for a square avatar), click bicubic sharper, then save as a jpg. at quality 0 or 1. It will appear to be only 9 kb, but ends up being more.

Also, how does one's website get attached to posts like this? Mine does not appear, even though it's listed on my portfolio. Thanks for any help!! --Anna Lisa

Have you tried 'save for web'? Saving as a jpeg adds some unnecessary file size, I think for the preview or thumbnail or something. Save for web strips everything except the actual image, leaving you with a minimal file size.

I haven't tried that. I wasn't sure what that does, exactly, and whether it's "saving as" or simply saving. I don't want to lose my original. I suppose I can try it on a file I don't care about & check out the result. Thanks!

Floris, I finally found the spot here on NP (Preferences) for adding a signature, websites & photo. I tried your suggestion to "save for web", and as you can see, it worked! I don't know what it did differently from my manual attempts, but I'm just glad it worked. And it saved my original. I'll try the same thing over on PP.net. During the process, I checked out your SmugMug site (I'm on there too) and was completely floored by your fine work. I don't know what to say. I'm still drooling!

I also tried to make my websites into links on this forum, but as you can see below, they're not actual links. I tried many different methods using html, but none worked. I searched the forums and came up empty. Help, anyone??

It's the magic of Jim to the rescue! Thanks a mil.... I'd still love to know the "secret", however, since I may wanna change the sites & maybe others out there have the same question?? Aha, I'll meander over to "preferences" and look at the html. I suppose that would solve it.

Anna, you can simply put a in front of the Web address and a (minus the spaces) [/u r l] behind it and it'll turn the address into a hot link. Make sure the http:// is included in front of the www.

Hmm, this is odd. I've done this before on many other sites. I'd already tried the "trick", several times in fact, just as you stated, Steve, and just as it now appears in my edit preferences box. I had the http:// there as well. It's a mystery to me why this didn't work. The only thing I can figure is that maybe the I copied & pasted had spaces in it that I didn't realize were there. I'm stumped. Oh well, when I get a chance I'll try another one and see.
