Following Don Grall's lead, I headed to North Park for a three-day, last ditch attempt at greater sage grouse. I visited two leks, one on private land and the Delaney Buttes lek that Don photographed a few weeks ago. Thanks to Don for helping out with important details! The birds are at the very end of their mating season, with few females left to mate with. The females that are unsuccessful early in the season come back to the lek to mate in late April to the first week of May.
My trip featured gale force winds, horrible coffee at the Shell station - only .27¢ - and more bird variety than I could have imagined!
This is a male dispalying at the Delaney Buttes lek.
Cool stuff, that hawk and those ibis were real bonuses. Now I know what the mountains in the Mt Zirkel Wilderness look like, they were hiding behind lots of snow laden clouds when I was there.
