Thanks to everyone for the comments. Gale - this was taken Saturday. The only unpleasant part of the hike was seeing a copperhead where I stopped for a drink on the way out. At first I thought - "What a coincidence, a copperhead 5 feet away from the place I stopped for water." Then I realized I had probably walked right past dozens more, and that I saw this one only because I had stopped and looked around for a few minutes. The herpetologist I work with said copperheads are more likely to stike than a timber rattler, but that neither would strike unless provoked. That's comforting to know...
Bill, does your herpetologist friend think that stepping on one would be considered "provoking" them?
Now, I have a legit question to ask. Would the leather of a pair of cowboy boots prevent the fangs of a snake from penetrating through to the skin? Just wondering.
I asked him the same thing at lunch yesterday, and he said stepping on one is NOT considered provocation! Not sure if I believe that or not. As far as the leather cowboy boots go, I'd say probably not. They sell boots that are advertised as snake-proof, so I'm guessing they are a little thicker leather.
Update: After talking with Kory he said that most leather boots would probably be OK. He also said that people just don't get bit out hiking. Most snake bites happen when people are out doing things like picking blackberries in their sandals. Apparently stepping on one is considered provoking...
No, but I did suggest going here after finishing up the first location. They had to get back to Bentonville, so we went into Kingston where I bought them lunch, and I headed for Compton Falls afterwards. David Dempsey is quite a photographer and outdoorsman, and I always enjoy gear talk with other Nikon shooters, especially with pros that shoot for a living.

Great balance. The upper right limbs and lower left foreground are perfectly placed.
